2015 Sauvignon Blanc
Description
Crisp Sauvignon Blanc with just a hint of Semillon.
Tasting Notes
Ripe peach and melon aromas, honeyed tones and traces of oak spice meld in the nose of this harmonious Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon blend. Silken and weighty, the wine offers deep flavors of tangy lemon and peach cobbler backed by lively acidity on the long finish.
Vineyard Notes
Our Sauvignon Blanc grapes grow at the foot of the Mayacamas Mountains, on gently rolling hills with marine sedimentary soils. Located in the lower Sonoma Valley just north of Carneros, this site provides a southern exposure for the vines, and is slightly warmer than the surrounding area. Our Semillon source is up-valley, just north of Kenwood, in well-drained volcanic soils on the valley floor. This location enjoys warm days and cool, sometimes foggy nights.
Production Notes
The 2015 growing season proved to be one of the more difficult in recent years, yet the resulting fruit is some of the most exceptional. A dry, warm winter and accelerated bud break was followed by a cool spring. Much needed rain arrived in May and contributed to a small fruit set. Summer was consistently warm, allowing the small berries to slowly mature, gaining complexity and intensity.
Winemaker Notes
Don Van Staaveren, who made the Wine Spectator's number one wine among its "Top 100 Wines of the World" in 2000, crafted this complex Sauvignon Blanc. For three decades at Chateau St. Jean, Don produced award-winning Fume Blanc, and both Graves-style and Sauterne-style Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon wines.
